Colombia is no longer just a stop for cultural travelers or coffee lovers; it’s fast becoming one of the world’s most exciting destinations for trail runners. Few countries pack so much diversity into such a small footprint: one morning you’re running beneath the tallest palm trees on Earth, the next you’re tracing volcanic ridgelines above 4,000 meters, and the next you’re winding through jungle trails alive with the hum of cicadas.
The scene here is evolving quickly. From short beginner-friendly routes to epic high-altitude challenges for veteran ultra-runners, Colombia offers something for every stride and every spirit. Whether you’re lacing up for your first trail adventure abroad or chasing your next big endurance test, Colombia’s landscapes are ready to welcome you.
Not every trail run in Colombia has to start at 3,000 meters. Some of the country’s most enchanting routes are short, approachable, and perfect for anyone new to trail running or simply looking for a scenic warm-up.
Cocora Valley, Quindío
The Cocora Valley is iconic for a reason: its wax palms, stretching up to 60 meters, create a surreal forest unlike anywhere else in the world. Trail loops here can be as short as 5–10 kilometers, with gentle ascents that give you a taste of the Andes without the altitude shock. Birds call from the canopy, mist rolls across green hillsides, and the small town of Salento makes a welcoming base.
Chicaque Natural Park, near Bogotá
Just outside the capital lies a cloud forest wonderland. Trails descend into lush valleys filled with ferns, orchids, and waterfalls. Distances range from 3 to 12 kilometers, making it a great training ground for those adjusting to Colombia’s terrain. The altitude (around 2,700 meters) also provides a gentle introduction to running in thinner air.
Minca, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta
On the Caribbean coast, the Sierra Nevada rises dramatically from the sea, creating the world’s highest coastal mountain range. Trails around Minca wind through coffee farms, waterfalls, and viewpoints over the Caribbean Sea. Distances of 15–25 kilometers are common, with steep climbs that test your endurance. The reward? A post-run dip in jungle pools or a hammock nap overlooking the coastline.
Tatamá National Park, Risaralda
Remote and less visited, Tatamá offers a raw taste of Colombia’s biodiversity. Trails climb through cloud forests into high-altitude páramo, where frailejones dot the landscape. Runs here typically range from 12 to 20 kilometers, with moderate technical sections. It’s also a hotspot for birdwatchers, so don’t be surprised if you share your trail with binocular-wielding ecotourists.
For those who crave challenge, Colombia delivers in spades. Its Andean backbone is lined with volcanoes and páramos, offering some of the most demanding (and rewarding) high-altitude trail runs in South America.
Los Nevados National Natural Park
Los Nevados is the crown jewel of Colombia’s trail running scene. Covering over 58,000 hectares, the park rises from cloud forests to glaciers, with trails that push you above 4,400 meters.
Here, you can run past Nevado del Ruiz, skirt glacial lagoons, and move through páramo landscapes where frailejones stand like ancient guardians. The altitude is brutal, the weather unpredictable, but the payoff is extraordinary: sweeping views of snow-capped volcanoes and a deep connection to landscapes that supply water to much of Colombia’s Coffee Region.
Distances vary, from 15-kilometer day runs to multi-day high-mountain expeditions. Los Nevados is best approached with guides who know its ecosystems and can help runners acclimatize safely. For trail runners, it’s both a playground and a pilgrimage.
Nevado del Tolima
For an even more intense challenge, the volcanic cone of Nevado del Tolima looms at 5,215 meters. While summit attempts require mountaineering skills, the approach routes are runnable and breathtaking. Expect long days, technical trails, and a true sense of remoteness.
Colombia’s trail scene is evolving rapidly, and with it, opportunities for ultra-distance runners seeking the ultimate test.
The Ultra-Trail Colombia Races
Events like Ultra-Trail Colombia showcase the country’s world-class potential. Courses wind through coffee plantations, highland forests, and rugged Andean ridgelines, often exceeding 50 kilometers. These races are tough: humidity, altitude, and technical terrain combine to push even seasoned runners to their limits. But they’re also festive, with Colombian warmth and energy fueling every aid station.
Crossing the Coffee Triangle
Imagine linking multiple coffee towns in a single run: Salento to Filandia, Manizales to Pereira. Routes can be stitched together into 50–70 kilometer adventures, blending endurance with culture. You’ll pass fincas where coffee cherries dry in the sun, share trails with farmers and mules, and feel the pulse of a region that defines Colombia’s identity.
Colombia is a country of contrasts: Caribbean coastlines and Andean peaks, coffee farms and páramo deserts, jungle humidity and glacial winds. For trail runners, this means every route is an adventure into something new, and every trail is a chance to connect with landscapes and people in unforgettable ways.
