Ep. 30
"Reclaiming, reconnecting, and running"

with Sergio Ávila

Our heroes are closer to us than we think, our role models are closer to us than we think. And, for those young people listening: you might have your role models, but also you are somebody’s role model. Somebody’s looking up to you to try to be like you. It doesn’t matter if you’re in middle school or in high school or early in your running career, wherever you are, even if you’re failing, someone is learning from your failures, so be humble in accepting them and know that they will have an influence on somebody else, whether you know it or not, that’s not important, but allow somebody else to see a path in their life. You are a role model today, you are an ancestor in training, and keep going, keep making mistakes, you’ll learn more.”
– Sergio Ávila

In this episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with Sergio Avila, a biologist, (recovering) conservationist, and runner. Sergio has dedicated his life to studying and protecting the ecosystems of North America, particularly the Sonoran Desert.

During the interview, Sergio shares his experiences as a scientist and conservationist, as well as his passion for running. He discusses how his love for nature, history and the environment has driven him to pursue a career in science and conservation.

In this episode, listeners will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of conservation and the role of science in telling better stories to protect our planet.

OUR HOST: ALEX DICKINSON

Alex Dickinson is a writer, runner, and a yoga and meditation teacher. He approaches running and yoga practice with a similar mindset—as ways to connect mind and body, explore internal and external landscapes, and simply feel better. He finds the pairing of the pursuits is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s his mission to share the gifts of these practices fairly and equitably, with a great deal of respect for the roots of the practice and those who have passed it down the generations.
