Mountains have always held a special place in the hearts of adventurers, dreamers, and seekers of solace. On this International Mountain Day, we honor these majestic giants that shape our landscapes, inspire our journeys, and ground us in the rhythm of the earth. As part of our celebration, we’ve invited the Aire Libre team to share their personal reflections—a collection of words and thoughts woven into a heartfelt love letter to the mountains that continue to guide and transform us.
I don’t believe in horizontality because I love mountains.
Though it’s true that I treasure the dreamlike rest, like an unfurled petate.
Roughness casts shadows, creating contrast and shape—between vertices, the image forms.
I believe in the power of above and below, as well as all directions.
Mountain jaguars are far less studied compared to the jaguars of the Yucatán Peninsula.
The few jungles still spared in Veracruz and Tabasco are embraced by vertiginous terrain.
If we are to reclaim our wild humanity, let us travel where democracy and horizontality have failed.
Sliding to remember the rugged gifts of existence’s uneven topography
Where the gravity of communication cracks, descends, and still (yet) holds hiding places with spots and diamond-streaked backs.
I choose the rictus of the mountain.
Friends and equals to be cherished, not conquered.
Thank you for holding me when I couldn’t find my center, and for the gentle reminders whenever I was lost.
The mountain is medicine, one of the greatest I’ve encountered on life’s journey—a place where everything converges: calm, contemplation, peace, death, but also movement, energy, and the sheer will to live.
The mountain can always offer us something different, but what can we give back to the mountain?
The mountains are sacred temples of wisdom.
You are the reminder I seek when I forget what it means to be small, not diminished, but rooted in a vastness that humbles and expands me all at once.
I love you not for the way you offer escape, but for the way you hold a mirror to what is real. When I look at you, I see everything I could never carry alone: the weight of time, the stories etched in your stone, the unapologetic vastness of a world that owes me nothing.
And yet, you give so much.

You are my most honest mirror, not afraid to tell me about my strengths, neither my flaws.
A reflection that can take me back and show me where I come from, and giving just enough clarity for me to find a new way.
A mountain for me is immensity and contemplation.
It is to be still to admire greatness.
The mountains are my teachers, friends, family—the place where I reflect my light and darkness, my guide toward wisdom and peace.
Mountain, you stand as a silent observer of time, witnessing the ebb and flow of life. Your peaks touch the heavens, and your valleys cradle the earth. You are a symbol of strength, resilience, and enduring beauty.
In climbing your slopes, I find a mirror to my own soul, reflecting my strengths, my weaknesses, and my potential.
