Portugal is a favorite destination among visitors looking for the perfect blend of coastal beauty, historic cities, and unspoiled nature. While many flock to Lisbon, Porto, or the Algarve for sun-soaked beaches, the country’s inland regions are an ideal destination for those craving trail runs along coastal paths with breathtaking Atlantic views. The Aldeias do Xisto (Schist Villages) region stands as a hidden treasure, boasting a rare fusion of natural splendor, rich heritage, and outdoor adventures.
The Aldeias do Xisto region comprises 27 villages spread across the Lousã, Açor, and Gardunha mountain ranges. These villages are known for their traditional schist stone houses, cobblestone streets, and a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. For active travelers, the region is particularly appealing with an extensive network of trails set against the backdrop of pristine forests, rivers, and breathtaking mountain views.

Over the centuries, the villages have faced periods of decline, particularly during the 20th century when many residents migrated to urban areas or abroad in search of better opportunities. However, recent efforts have focused on revitalizing the region through sustainable tourism and the preservation of its unique cultural and architectural heritage.
Cerdeira, one of the Aldeias do Xisto, is a prime example of a town that has been transformed into an artistic hub. Originally abandoned, it was revitalized by a group of artists who restored the traditional schist houses and established the “Cerdeira – Home for Creativity.” This space now hosts workshops, artist residencies, and cultural events, drawing visitors from around the world.
The ideal time to explore the Aldeias do Xisto is from spring to early autumn (April to October). During these months, the weather is mild, and the trails are in excellent condition for hiking and trail running. Avoid the peak summer months (July and August) if you prefer cooler temperatures.
Grande Rota das Aldeias do Xisto: This long-distance trail covers over 600 kilometers and connects many of the schist villages. It offers varied terrain, from riverside paths to mountainous routes.
PR1 LSA – Rota das Buracas do Casmilo: A shorter circular route in the Lousã Mountains, offering dramatic limestone formations and sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
Caminho do Xisto de Gondramaz: A well-marked trail that takes you through dense forests and past traditional water mills.

A trip to Aldeias do Xisto wouldn’t be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. Traditional dishes like chanfana, a hearty goat stew cooked in red wine, and talasnico, a unique rye bread, are must-tries. Many local restaurants pride themselves on serving farm-to-table meals that reflect the region’s agricultural heritage.
