There’s something about the looming shadow of turning 40 that seems to awaken a dormant gene in many of us—a gene that suddenly compels us to lace up running shoes and hit the pavement with a fervor usually reserved for chasing after the ice cream truck in our youth.
Perhaps it’s nature’s way of proving we’re still vital, a middle finger to the encroaching mid-life crisis, or simply a mass delusion that we can outrun the relentless march of time. Whatever the reason, as I found myself on the precipice of this meaningful age, I, too, fell victim to this peculiar phenomenon.
It’s as if getting closer to 40 comes with a complimentary pair of running shorts and a voice in your head that whispers, “Maybe you should sign up for that marathon you’ve been thinking about.”
I had an inkling that this marathon journey would share some similarities with another grand adventure I was already on: first-time fatherhood. But I was eager to explore just how deep these parallels ran, curious to uncover the profound connections between these two life-changing experiences.
What I’m about to share unfolds in the heart of my beloved hometown, Mexico City—a place that has witnessed my entire journey from birth to the present day. This sprawling metropolis provided the perfect backdrop for two of the most transformative experiences of my life: training for my first marathon and welcoming my beautiful baby girl into the world.
There’s a special joy in knowing that the same streets that saw me take my first steps would now feel the rhythm of my marathon training. And while the community of my childhood is no longer part of my life, I’m deeply grateful for the new, beautiful community that has embraced me, supporting me as I grow into fatherhood. This city has gifted me new connections that mirror its own capacity for renewal and love.
Just as the journey of parenthood begins long before the first cry echoes through the delivery room, my marathon journey started months before I ever crossed that starting line. Each early morning run, each planned meal, each moment of doubt overcome—these were the building blocks of something greater than myself. Similarly, each prenatal appointment, each nursery item carefully chosen, each anxious and excited conversation with my partner—these were the first steps in preparing for a lifelong marathon of love and responsibility.
It seems obvious but probably the biggest lesson marathon training taught me was to trust the process. There were days when my legs felt really tired and heavy, when the idea of running 26.2 miles seemed impossible. But I learned to trust the plan, to learn from the gradual buildup of miles, and to follow the wisdom of those who had run this path before me.
Parenthood, I’ve found, demands a similar kind of faith. In those early days, when sleep was a distant memory, and every cry seemed like an unsolvable puzzle, I had to trust the process of growth—both my daughter’s and my own. This is something I still need to remind myself often. There’s very little we can control other than the way we choose to show up.
Another great lesson I learned from marathon training was the often neglected skill of listening to the body. Every twinge, every rhythm of breath, every surge or dip of energy became a message to interpret. There’s a deep listening ability involved in running that I came to appreciate which allowed me to explore my limits safely, to know when to push ahead and when to ease back. However, this took time. I was often worried I was not running as much or as fast as I should. Self-doubt is part of the journey, and overcoming it is part of the process.
As I reflect on the parallels between marathon training and my journey into fatherhood, I’m struck by a profound realization: if these experiences have been transformative for me, I can only begin to imagine the depth of a mother’s journey. While I trained my body to run 26.2 miles, my partner’s body was engaged in the ultimate marathon—growing and nurturing our child from within.
Just as I learned to listen to my body during long runs, she tuned into the subtle changes and needs of her changing form and the new life inside of her. Where my identity shifted through the discipline of training, hers underwent a fundamental transformation, redefining her relationship with her body, her sense of self, and her place in the world. The endurance, strength, and adaptability required of her far surpassed any physical feat I could achieve.
As a father, I am humbled by the profound journey that mothers undertake, recognizing that our paths, while different, are transformative in their own ways. This realization deepens my appreciation for my wife and all mothers, while also highlighting the beauty of our shared adventure in parenthood.
I often found myself joking with a friend about the absurdity of marathon running. Let’s face it, running 26.2 miles is, objectively speaking, a rather strange thing to do. We’re essentially paying good money to wake up at an ungodly hour, squeeze into our shorts, and then proceed to punish our bodies for several hours straight. All this while fighting the urge to question our life choices as we hurt in places we didn’t even know could hurt.
And for what? So we can stumble across a finish line, looking like we’ve just escaped from a particularly vigorous zombie apocalypse, and claim a medal that’s essentially a participation trophy for adults? Let’s not forget the ‘recovery’ period, where we walk like we’ve been riding horses for a week and stairs become our mortal enemy. It’s as if we’ve invented a socially acceptable form of masochism and then celebrated it with electrolyte drinks and a few bananas. The whole thing seems like a practical joke that got way out of hand – a dare from our cave-dwelling ancestors that we’re still trying to live up to for some reason.
Yet, as ridiculous as it may seem on the surface (and believe me, it often feels ridiculous when you’re in the middle of it), there’s something profound hiding beneath all that sweat and those questionable fashion choices. As I’ve reflected on throughout this essay, this apparently useless and arbitrary goal of running 26.2 miles has taught me lessons that I hope my daughter can carry with her through life. Because sometimes, it’s in pursuing these seemingly absurd challenges that we discover the deepest truths about ourselves and what we’re capable of achieving.
These are the 5 lessons that I hope to pass on to my daughter as she grows and faces her own challenges in life:
As I sit here, my muscles still aching from the marathon and my heart full from the joy of fatherhood, I’m struck by the beautiful symmetry of these two journeys. Both have pushed me to my limits, revealed strengths I never knew I had, and opened my eyes to the wonder of human potential.
In the quiet moments, when my daughter’s tiny hand wraps around my finger, I feel a surge of emotion that rivals any runner’s high. I realize that in many ways, my marathon was just a prelude—a training run for the lifelong marathon of fatherhood that lies ahead. And as I look down at her sleeping face, I’m filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and purpose. For in her, I see not just my future but the continuation of a journey that started long before me. With every step I take, every mile I run, and every bedtime story I read, I’m not just leaving footprints—I’m carving out a path for her to follow, explore, and, ultimately, make her own. And that, I realize, is the greatest marathon of all.
