Ep. 25
"A World of Running"

with Like the wind magazine

“Something that’s quite unique about Like the Wind for people who’ve never read it is that it’s not just a bunch of editors writing about other people, we also accept submissions so we’ve got a lot of first person stories about their personal journey, a specific story that links to their running, and some are funny, some bring us to tears straight when they land in our inbox. It is so varied that it just illustrates the multitude reasons why people need running in their lives.”

— Julia Freeman

Like the Wind Mag has been changing the game in the running media landscape since they launched in 2014. Bringing beautiful design together with amazing storytelling in collaboration with a range of artists and writers.

We spoke with co-founders Julie Freeman and Simon Freeman, longtime friends of Aire Libre, about the project, Using Running as exploration, and their recent book: Running Wild: Inspirational Trails from Around the World.

About Like The Wind

The magazine started as a spare-time project with just Simon Freeman, editor and Julie Freeman, creative director, working on it.

Simon and Julie decided to launch the magazine whilst running around the Mont Blanc talking about the magazines that they loved from areas such as cycling, adventuring and mountaineering.

Over 3 years later, they are still only a tiny team managing all things Like the Wind on top of demanding day jobs: Julie and Simon plus Imogen Lees (deputy editor) and Alex Murphy (deputive creative director). And, last but by no means least, all the contributors – writers, designers.

Each edition of Like the Wind magazine is a collection of running stories. There are personal anecdotes, inspirational tales, reportage, beautiful illustrations and stunning photography, publishing an edition every quarter.

Alex Dickinson is a writer, runner, and a yoga and meditation teacher. He approaches running and yoga practice with a similar mindset—as ways to connect mind and body, explore internal and external landscapes, and simply feel better. He finds the pairing of the pursuits is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s his mission to share the gifts of these practices fairly and equitably, with a great deal of respect for the roots of the practice and those who have passed it down the generations.
