Overview

Join us for a unique trail-running retreat in the Lake District region of Chilean Patagonia, one of South America’s most remote destinations and a hidden gem waiting to be explored. From coastal towns to snow-drizzled volcanoes, Pacific fjords, and lush rainforests, experience the finest of Chilean culture, cuisine, and nature. 

On this 8-day running experience, we will explore the best of Chile’s Lake District, famed for alpine-inspired towns and stunning landscapes of deep blue lakes and snow-capped volcanoes.

Your Adventure Itinerary

Upon our arrival in Puerto Varas, we are greeted with a warm welcome. Afterward, we proceed to Chepu for check-in and a well-deserved rest in our cozy cabins, each accommodating 4 to 6 persons.

 

As the day unfolds, we will gather in the evening for a special welcome dinner ceremony at the charming Chimango CaraCara, setting the stage for the memorable experiences that await us.

We start the day with a stimulating meditation session set against the serene backdrop of the river, wetlands, mountains, and coastal range. After a homemade breakfast, we embark on an 11 km run along the pristine Pacific coastline, navigating dunes and wetlands, and encountering local wildlife. The run culminates in a thrilling descent through native forest trails.

 

Before transferring to Chiloé Island, we’ll indulge in a delightful brunch with our local hosts. The day concludes with a sunset yoga session on a wooden deck, offering spectacular panoramic lake views, and setting the tone for our stay at Palafito Lodge.

Our day begins with an invigorating cold plunge, setting the tone for the breathtaking views awaiting us at Cole Cole, our favorite hidden gem in Chiloé National Park. Crossing a small lagoon, we enter this coastal paradise to enjoy a 12 km beach run along clear sands and deep blue seas, surrounded by lush jungle.

 

After exploring Cole Cole, we return to Chiloé for a serene sunset yoga session on the Palafito terrace, where the soothing sounds of crashing waves help us reflect and unwind.

Accommodation: Ecolodge – Palafito Cucao Lodge | 4 to 6-person shared cabins

We rise early to tackle the Ferry ride that will take us to Chaitén village, from there we will drive 60km to Caleta Gonzalo, a small town on the seafront, located in the eastern part of the Pumalin National Park, where we will trek through lush forests and waterfalls.

 

In the afternoon, we will have the option to go on a chill stroll to a scenic lookout point, offering a perfect vantage for witnessing the sunset. To wrap up the day, we’ll relax and unwind in a wood-fired hot tub with a stunning view of the lake.

Accommodation: Cabañas Caleta Gonzalo. Rustic but luxurious shared cabins with spectacular views.

Early in the morning we head towards the Douglas Tompkins National Park, where we will follow the forestry Michinmahuida trail, one of the most epic and extensive trails on our trip, its final destination is the western flank of the Michinmahuida stratovolcano, where you can see one of its impressive glaciers.

Accommodation: Cabañas Caleta Gonzalo. Rustic but luxurious shared cabins with spectacular views.

Heading south of Caleta Gonzalo we will reach the town of Hornopirén through an incredible ferry ride in the fjords. We will then cross Hornopirén village into the Puelo River, a Chilean river that originates in Argentina famous for its beaches and wells.

Accommodation: Río Puelo, lodge in a comfortable shared cabins.

As we bid farewell to Río Puelo, our journey will take us to Puerto Varas for our final run, a remarkable 16 km route around the iconic Osorno Volcano. We’ll start from the eastward hill of La Picada, gently ascending through the forested terrain until we reach the edge of the vegetation near the famous Paso de la Desolación.

 

Our evening unfolds in the welcoming embrace of Petrohué Lodge, a peaceful luxury hotel characterized by its traditional German architecture,  spectacular views across the lake, and two swimming pools, perfect for unwinding at the end of the day.

As we wake on our last day, the morning will grant us free time to wander and discover the captivating town of Puerto Varas. A great opportunity to savor the local atmosphere and bid our farewells to this enchanting place.

 

At noon, we will embark on a direct shuttle from Puerto Varas to the Puerto Montt airport, where we anticipate arriving by 14:00 hrs.

Throughout nights 1 to 6, indulge in the warmth of our comfortable cabins and ecolodges, each accommodating 4 to 6 people, ensuring a cozy and local atmosphere. Unwind in these thoughtfully designed spaces, each equipped with a private bathroom for your convenience.

For our final night, we retreat to Petrohué Lodge, where cozy shared rooms accommodate 2 people. Nestled between the snowcapped Osorno Volcano and the shores of Todos los Santos Lake, this secluded gem offers panoramic views of the Patagonian landscape, complemented by the Lodge’s two swimming pools.

In December, the Lake District of Patagonia experiences the early days of its summer season, offering a unique and pleasant climate for exploration. Days are characterized by mild to warm temperatures, ranging from around 10°C to 22°C (50°F to 72°C). While the weather can be relatively unpredictable with occasional rainfall, December generally sees increasing periods of sunshine and longer daylight hours. This time of year showcases the region’s lush landscapes in full bloom, with vibrant flora and clear skies, providing a picturesque backdrop for outdoor activities and adventures.

– Waterproof windbreaker jacket (compact).
– Sandals, bathing suit, and quick-drying towel.
